Be not afraid

Be not afraid

Ping Lacson’s most recent slogan – Be not afraid – suddenly rings all sorts of hollow after his escape from the Philippines and the unwanted attentions of the the Department of Justice,  which is seeking him out in connection with the murder of Bubby Dacer. How can we “be not afraid” when the man himself has been proven to be … Read entire article »

Mayday

The other day, I was tuned in to my favorite radio talk show idiot and he asked a question that really piqued my interest. He asked  what “mayday” meant. The guest – an Airforce man, I think – blandly answered that it was a distress call. I cringed. That was obviously not the question. So why “mayday”? Apparently, “mayday” is the anglicized version of “m’aidez” which was a standard call for help in French, translated as “come help me.”  Oh, and incidentally, the distress call is always repeated three times: “mayday-mayday-mayday.” This is to make it clear that the distress call is for real and not just a casual mention of the word “mayday.” Thanks internetz! *hug* Like Unlike … Read entire article »

Laying the predicate for automation failure

Laying the predicate for automation failure

One of the first things a lawyer learns is how to lay the predicate – that is, how to set up a killer question or, as may sometimes be the case, to set up an excuse for a future outcome. Kinda like how in scrabble, people afraid to lose normally whine and bitch about how their letters suck. That way, … Read entire article »

Visions

Visions

I have a vision that Noynoy Aquino will be the next President of the Philippines. The same vision I had with his mom former President Cory Aquino. I had a vision of seven coup in the clouds at Santo Domngo Church. I had also a vision of Laban sign in the clouds at Cordillera Street in Quezon City. I had … Read entire article »

Erap’s back, Gloria gets to stick around

Bravo Comelec. It’s no mean feat to be able to kiss one man’s ass and at the same lick his enemy’s pink rubber boots, but the Comelec’s Second Division did it AND managed to surf the populist wave, all at the same time. So I say again: Bravo, Comelec. With regard to Gloria Arroyo, whatever Risa Hontiveros says, there is no prohibition against an incumbent president seeking election to any office other than the Presidency. This one, I think, the Comelec called right. It’s the ruling on Estrada that’s got me agitated. The Second Division – yep, the same one behind that horrific bit of troglodytish homophobia – today ruled that Joseph Estrada was eligible to run for President. … Read entire article »

Not made of stone

Right. Do you have any idea how hard it was to wean myself from you? Do you have any idea what it cost me to learn how to live without you? My smoking reached new heights of suicidal giving me a cough that today, almost three months later, I still have; I started drinking nights, leaving me reeling from the arms of one person to another to another, trying desperately to find the warmth and love that I sought from you; I alienated everyone who ever loved me simply because I could not stand the thought of being loved by anyone but you. I lived through all that and more, just to get my life back on … Read entire article »

Web money for nothing? You wish!

In what could be a first in the country, Ang Kapatiran has opened a page on its website (www.angkapatiranparty.com) to solicit contributions in pesos and US dollars through credit cards. The donor will be directed to an Internet payment page maintained by the Asia Pacific E-Serve Corp. Yeah. It’s a first. And it just goes to show you that change – in … Read entire article »

Mayon

Mayon

Ahh, Mayon – so very Filipino you are. For weeks, you’ve treated us to spectacular lava flows and ominous rumblings that led us to believe an equally spectacular eruption would follow. In anticipation, we’ve un-homed people, stuffed them in refugee camps, and basically disrupted life in your neighborhood. All for you, Mayon – because you told us you were about to … Read entire article »
